In February of 2014, I got sick...really sick. Went in for a chest X-Ray followed up with a CT Scan, it was bad and my lungs were filled with fluid, I had a sever case of Pneumonia. No biggy let’s slap this antibiotic in you, grab this inhaler you should be good to go. Two days later I ended up in the hospital, the pneumonia got worse, four different antibiotics later and some amazing breathing treatments I could breath, one night in the hospital and then I was home for a two week recovery plan.
April 2014, my chest still isn’t feeling quite right so off for another chest x-ray. Doctor said, all my blood work came back clean but he can clearly see I am not doing good. My lymph nodes in my chest were engorged. We needed to rule out cancer (Lymphoma) as the last option.
May 2014, I am cancer free...So what in the world is going on. My lymph nodes are pissy with me and terribly inflamed….Off to a Rheumatologists for more blood work.
July 2014, FINALLY AN ANSWER. I have Sarcoidosis. Sarcoidosis is a disease caused by small areas of inflammation, and for me its location was my lungs. In serious cases, sarcoidosis can cause scar tissue in the lungs, which can affect the lungs' ability to move oxygen into the bloodstream. Well I was blessed with getting a serious case and onto a max dosage of inhaled steroids I went.
But all these steroids weren’t fixing my pain and I had total discomfort. So onto Cymbalta for my Fibromyalgia, that should help with the pain and help my muscles relax. It did, for a while, as long as I was willing to deal with not feeling like ME. This was not the answer for me.
So I did my research and I figured if inflammation was the problem, let’s get rid of it!!! I CAN DO THIS! So I went on an Anti-Inflammatory Diet (21 Day Fix Modified) and dedicated myself to drinking Shakeology. Within one week, I could feel a relief in chest pain, within 4 weeks there was no chest pain!
November 2014, I became a certified PiYo instructor.
January 2015, I AM FREE OF ALL MEDS (except the steroids) and I can run and chase my kids around without feeling like I am going to die of chest pain!
So how does this tie to beachbody? MY COACH. My wonderful coach pushed me through what I would classify as the worst year of my life last year, she pushed me to stick to my eating, focused on being positive, and focused on helping me making ME HAPPY. To me she was my rock, she was there all year for me even though I could not work out. She never forgot about me. She always made sure to call me out and shoot me random messages to make sure I was doing the most that I could do for me. MY COACH IS AN INSPIRATION, and I want to be the inspiration for others. Through sickness and in Health!
So let me start off with...I AM NOT A DOCTOR... I just know because I have tried and experienced. I suffer from chronic fibromyalgia. If it wasn’t for meds it would take me 2 hours of stretching and slow moving before I did not look like a 90 year old woman. You want to know the problem here, the MEDS JUST MASK THE FIBRO. So I hate taking them. So I did a lot of research on my own to try and figure out why my body can’t move in the morning, why do I have shooting pains randomly all over my body, why do I feel like I am in a fog all day, why are my intestines fighting with me...SO MANY WHY’s.
Then I found it, the answer...INFLAMMATION!!! I have been pushing my body so hard for so long and not helping it to recover. So, my next journey, how do I remove the inflammation from my body. And at that exact moment I was introduced to Dr. Andrew Weil, M.D., is a world-renowned leader and pioneer in the field of integrative medicine, a healing oriented approach to health care which encompasses body, mind, and spirit.
So I read on…” The Anti-Inflammatory Pyramid In Depth - Part 1” by Dr. Andrew Weil - A guide to healthy Eating. You can find all of his books on Amazon or visit his website : www.drweil. com. Yes, I put a space in for the Facebook posts so I can add images at the end :)
He is not the only Author that has studies on this type of eating, other authors would be J.J Virgin, Dr. Susan Blum, Alexandro Junger, Darin Olien and the list goes on.
The basis of the diet in one sentence...ELIMINATION. Eliminate everything and slowly add back in to see what triggers your symptoms.
→ NO GLUTEN
→ NO DAIRY
→ NO PEANUTS
→ NO EGGS
→ NO CORN
→ NO SOY
→ NO ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS
My triggers, all of it including SUGARS!! I eliminated everything, slowly added back in and had to remove again. BUT THIS WORKS FOR ME!!! I love this diet. For me I had to take it one step further and eliminate ALL GRAINS, as I read in Practical Paleo by Diane Sanfilippo.
My results, as long as I stick to the diet and DO NOT cheat, I FEEL AMAZING!! All of my symptoms are practically gone! As of March 2nd, I will meet with an Internist to begin my journey of being symptom free. The Internist will look at your diet, blood work, habits, everything about you and adjust your diet and habits on how you need to live to be symptom free. Do you eat too many metals in your diet, not enough protein, not enough potassium, etc. An Internist goal, just like all the other doctors and authors I mentioned above, is to get to the solution of the problem. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LIVE IN PAIN!!
My recommendation, do your research for YOU and find what works for YOU. If it wasn’t for the love and amazing support of my family I am sure I would be on the meds today. As they did a lot of research themselves and always told me what they discovered and new authors to listen to.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST, at LEAST 30 MINUTES OF EXERCISE DAILY. You are only as strong as YOUR weakest Limb!!
Below in the comments I will post links to my favorite reads!

I love sleep. Ever since I was a day old I slept through the night. As an adult I take as many naps as I can...which means I might be able to squeeze it in with my kids naps on the weekend. So I found a great article that has recommendations for the amount of sleep you should get!!
I love researching herbs and their benefits. There are so many naturally grow herbs out there that have been used for thousands of years and with today pharmaceutical companies, we have lost touched with our roots.
So the other day I was sitting in my internist office and reading a magazine before my appointment and I opened this us to a section on Ginkgo Biloba and the effects it has on ADD/ADHD...not that anyone in my family has it but this intrigued me. So I began reading up on Ginkgo to see if it could help me sharpen my memory.
The list of other uses of ginkgo is very long. This may be because this herb has been around for so long. Ginkgo biloba is one of the longest living tree species in the world. Ginkgo trees can live as long as a thousand years. Using ginkgo for asthma and bronchitis was described in 2600 BC. (1)
It has been used medicinally for thousands of years and is one of the top selling herbs. Ginkgo is one of the best herbs for overall brain health by improving the blood circulation. ADD/ADHD
Ginkgo comes in a few forms: Liquid Extracts, Capsules, Tablets, Teas
My personal favorite is in tea form. So if you have a Ginkgo tree in your front yard, before grabbing a leaf off and eating it, please do your research!!
AND REMEMBER, if you are on medications you need to always consult YOUR DOCTOR before taking anything new.
How to get started working out, you want to but it seems so scary!
1. Set a goal date...What is the date that you are going to aim for to start eating right, to begin the baby steps to exercising, what workout program will you follow. Get all of the questions answered and SET THE DATE!
2. It is a proven fact, that buying a new workout outfit can encourage one to start working out. I am not saying go buy a whole new wardrobe, but go buy a new pair of workout pants, or a shirt, or a new pair of sneakers!
3. Determine a workout bottle, my favorite is the Gatorade bottle with the little orange nubbin top that won't spill. Write on a piece of paper your favorite motivational quote and with clear tape, tape it to the bottle. When you feel tired, go grab a sip of water, read your motivation, and get back to the grind.
4. Motivation, write on a post it note what your motivation is. Is it your children, is it your desire to be healthy, is it you goal to get fit and trim for a wedding, do you have a fitness competition coming up or a reunion. Whatever your motivation is, write it on a post it note and put it on your bathroom mirror so you will see it every day!
Sounds easy right? It sounds easy, but getting prepped to change your lifestyle can feel overwhelming, so take baby steps. Maybe the first 2 weeks you change your diet, then the next two weeks you add in walking 1-2 miles a day before or after dinner, then the next two weeks you add something else and eliminate something bad from your diet (aka, sugars). TAKE BABY STEPS. It is your first step to a new you.
THIS IS NOT A DIET, this is a lifestyle change and it is for YOU and not anyone else!
WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR YOURSELF??
What is a macronutrient?
Let's break this word apart... "Macro" means large, "Nutrients" are those substances that your body needs to grow, to help maintain your metabolism, and to keep your body running. Macronutrients help provide the bulk of our energy.
So where do you find macronutrients?
Protein. Fat. Carbohydrates. There is the key to where you find macronutrients and the primary nutrients to our total caloric intake.
So in the image in the upper right is a great diagram on where we breakdown the three keys to macronutrients and a great example of good carbohydrates, good fats and healthy proteins.
The image just below that breaks it down so you can see types of food from poor selections to the best.
So we need to understand what a gram of protein means to a calorie. One gram of protein is equivalent to four calories. One gram of carbohydrate is equivalent to four calories. One gram of fat is equivalent to nine calories.
So that was easy...So know how much protein do I need? So take a 150 pound person, their protein intake should equal their weight. 150 pound person, 150 gram of protein. We then take that 150 grams of protein and times that 4 which means that they need to consume 600 calories of protein each day.
Okay, onto fat! So based on this 150 pound person, at a 1,200 caloric intake need. You will take the caloric need (1,200 calories) x .25 (25% = 300 calories) divided by 9 (9 calories per gram of fat) = 33.33....so rounded up this 150 pound person needs to eat 34 grams of healthy fat per day.
Carbs...NO NOT CARBS! Yes, you need carbs! So out of the 1,200 calories, we have allocated 600 for protein and 300 for fat, so that leaves us 300 calories left...since 1 gram of carbohydrates is equivalent to 4 calories we divide 300 by 4 and get 74 grams of carbohydrates.
So 150 pound person with an intake of 1,200 calories should have...
150 grams of Protein to help your growth of new tissues and tissue repair
34 grams of Fat to change your body composition and keep your hormones in check
74 grams of Carbohydrates to give you the energy you need to be yourself!!
SO WHAT NOW?
Take what you just learned, save the images, see how you fair and adjust your food per your new learnings. Take it and use it! And remember, these figures are baselines, each individual will need to adjust based on what you goals are for your body.
Also on special this month is the P90X3 program and the Ultimate Reset. I do plan on purchsing the Ultimate Reset with a start date of May 1 to get me into killer shape for the summer pool.
Won't you join me!
Looking forward to working with you directly in April!
" Experts explain why some people should try for 30 minutes of exercise a day, while others need up to 90 minutes." - Click for Article
So for me 30 minutes a day gets my heart rate going, maintains my weight, boosts my energy. So what does 45 minutes do for me, now is the time that I start to trim down slowly and feel a little bit more refreshed. So what does 60 minutes do for me....It totally gets me ripped! No,I keep the trim down on fat, but I get toned, I have a lot more energy and I feel like I can do more during the day. But that is for me!
For you, you need to play with this. Try it for a month at 30 minutes, how do you feel? Try it for 45 minutes, do you notice any additional benefit? Try it for 60 minutes, how did it affect you? Every increment of time is different for each individual. Find what works for you, find an increment of time that makes you feel your greatest! For me, I love a good 60 minute workout.
Reach deep and find that motivation to get in at least 30 minutes a day, you will love the way you feel!!!
